Expressive writing is a growing area in the field of wellness and self-care. Just as you might develop a meditation or yoga practice, developing a writing practice for your personal well being is a wonderful, accessible tool that you can take anywhere, anytime and all that is required is a pen and paper.
Getting started on developing that practice is where I come in.
I was trained by the Toronto Writer’s Collective in the Amherst Writers & Artists Method as a writing workshop facilitator and have studied the work of Dr. James Pennebaker who is the foremost researcher on the benefits of expressive writing. Pennebaker has proven that writing for just 20 minutes a day for 4 consecutive days about emotional upheaval can result in significant improvement to your physical, mental and emotional health. After my training with the TWC, I went on to develop my own style of writing workshops with the specific intention of wellnesss and emotional exploration being the outcome rather than those benefits being a byproduct of the writing. This format works well for participants who want to write and explore their own stories, discover their own unique voice and release the burden of the untold within without the pressures of worrying about whether their writing is “good enough”. Maya Angelou once said “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you”, and this philosopy is the foundation on which I’ve built my workshops.

Nice Things People Are Saying
Just some lovely feedback that participants have shared with me following my workshops.
“It was an incredibly lovely workshop and you held the space beautifully! Thank you for sharing our story with us, and providing such a shining inspiration for living your truth.” – M. Schoppen
“You have a gift for allowing people to open up and feel safe about feeling and expressing their “stuff”. Keep up the great work you are doing.”- K. Oxley
“The small class size of like minded individuals felt great and Allison facilitated by creating a space of inclusion and understanding. Through the variety of unique and open ended writing exercises, we were encouraged to push through the emotional experiences we were writing about, yet there was never any pressure to do so. I was able to create a beautiful piece of writing, seemingly out of nowhere, with Allison’s positive feedback to continue. She draws from real experience and uses many practical suggestions and strategies to help you begin the process of healing from your experiences. Ultimately, it is up to us to continue or tap in, but the environment is designed to make this as engaging and safe as possible. I would recommend this class to anyone (which is everyone!) who is struggling, perhaps without even realizing, with negative events, ideas and stories about themselves they continue living and reliving. We all have a story. Express it through writing and make peace with it so it does not continue defining you. I was surprised with what I came up with, I’m sure you will be too.” – S. Palozzi
